I’ll probably feature every Stones Throw Records artist at one point but because Mason requested a little MF Doom, I thought I would drop knowledge on one of Doom’s producers and my personal favorite - Madlib aka the Beat Konducta, Quasimoto, Lord Quas, Otis Jackson, and the band leader of all these fictional bands: Yesteday’s New Quintet, The Jazzistics, The Young Jazz Rebels, Jackson Conti, Suntouch, The Jahari Massamba Unit, Kamala Walker & The Soul Tribe, The Last Electro-Acoustic Space Jazz & Percussion Ensemble, The Yesterdays Universe All-Stars, The Otis Jackson Jr. Trio, and The Eddie Prince Fusion Band. I was a fan of his long before I even knew he was when he was producing beats for the Alkaholiks and King Tee. Basically the guy is the most creative producer out there - drawing from all kinds of sources to pull together an almost psychedelic musical experience at times.

For this Quasimoto video you’ll hear a guy sampled liberally through out. It’s actually sampling of Melvin Van Peebles who in addition to directing several critically acclaimed films in the 60s(portraying blacks on film in a way that previously unheard of), was also a musician, PHD of astronomy, French & American playwright, the first black options trader in the Stock Exchange, etc. The guy is just brilliant. Anyway, these samples are taken from a combination of his movies and his obscure spoken word albums which originally inspired Gil Scot Heron to set his poetry to afro-beats who in turn inspired the very first rappers.
