What’s in a name?

…so I wanted to name this blog “SoundandVision” but some jackass teacher took it to dole out his class assignments (no offense to the guy but I don’t like teachers much).  I was at least hopeful the one who took that blog name would have the common courtesy to have some David Bowie content.  So the result of my misfortune(if you could call it that) is the blog your at now – “Sound or Vision” which is just a compromised way of saying I want to use this blog to post music & videos I’m currently digging.

A few things you should know about this blog.

Frequency: I’m going to try and keep this updated but I’m kind of a cyclical guy – I won’t even listen to music for one week and the next I will be listening non-stop.  I love sound – not only all music but the sound of wind chimes in the distance on a breezy day or the hum of a bus drive down the street.  For you the reader that means I may post ten entries in a week and none for the next week but I recommend you check back often so you don’t get too far behind.

Content: I’m not too keen on most of the blogosphere’s fascination with the newest, hottest thing.  Don’t get me wrong – I occasionally stop into blogs like Brooklyn Vegan, Aquarium Drunkard, or Gorilla vs Bear(or Pitchfork’s new music section once it gets filtered to them) to check out the newest bands and rarities, but the pressure of breaking the newest acts every day also means that a lot of crap makes those blogs while many great artists get lost in the daily shuffle of the next big thing.  In a way they do themselves a disservice.  I much prefer quality over quantity or newness.  To that end, this blog will be all over the place from some new band I heard walking down the street in the Live Music Capitol of the World(Austin made me capitalize that) or maybe some old Sister Rosetta Tharpe footage that I spent forever trying to track down after seeing the brief clip in Amelie or maybe some Kid Creole just because I dig him.  My blog, no rules.

Commentary: I’m a music lover and absolutely get pumped to have music conversations.  I encourage you to write comments about whether you like/don’t like something, recommendations, or maybe just a comment on the origins of that music.  I’m truly fascinated by not only the music but the lives of the artists and the conditions under which their music was created.  I’m a musician too so sometimes I might even go into a little tech talk about how musical technology effected a certain style(like reggae or early hip hop).   Any and all conversation is welcome.
