Ever heard of Fado music? Well here is chance to hear it from the “Queen of Fado”. Fado is a genre of Portuguese music noted by it’s bittersweet & sentimental – almost mournful songs played to mostly somber arrangements. The vocal style seems to be influenced at least a little bit by arabic music of Morocco. It must be a thread in Spanish music where the genre is defined more by the content and less by the musical style because I noticed many Mexican genres are defined similarly by the subject of the song.
I don’t remember how I heard about Amelia – probably the same way I heard about Umm Kulthum – from a musician who was interviewed. Anyway, check it out – this is really special music that you just don’t get to hear too often.
…I’ll do an Umm Kulthum post in the near future to keep a thread of “powerful female singers from far away places” thread going.
Dura Memoria by Amalia Rodrigues
did she say “have a mojito” at the beginning?
Sure sounds like it…I can’t believe I missed that earlier. Thanks for posting.
